The Feed Is Watching Back

Your child watches a video. They pause for a few seconds. Replay one part. Scroll past another. Within minutes, the feed begins changing. The same themes appear again. The same emotional tone. The same type of creators. It feels strangely accurate.

That's not coincidence. That's the algorithm learning in real time.

Most children think they're choosing what to watch. What they don't realise is that the feed is making choices too.

What Social Media Actually Wants

Most major social platforms rely on recommendation systems designed to maximise engagement. Not balance. Not perspective. Not necessarily usefulness. Attention.

Every pause. Every replay. Every extra second spent watching. Every action teaches the platform something.

Research from organisations like the Center for Humane Technology and Pew Research Center suggests that algorithmic feeds now shape a significant part of how teenagers experience the internet. Often more than active searching does.

The algorithm is running experiments on your child's phone constantly. It is trying to learn what keeps them watching. What excites them, what comforts them, even what makes them anxious.

Children Don't Notice The Loop

This is where things become more powerful. And more subtle.

The more a child engages with a particular type of content, the more the platform reinforces it.

Watch a few productivity videos? More productivity content appears. Search for appearance-related insecurities? The feed adapts around it. Become obsessed with a creator? The algorithm notices.

Not because somebody is personally targeting your child. Because the system is designed to amplify whatever holds attention.

A child's feed can slowly become a mirror that reflects their interests back to them. Then quietly begins amplifying them.

Research from institutions including Columbia University has explored how recommendation systems can narrow the range of content people encounter over time.

For adults, this can be subtle. For children, it can be formative.

The Real Attention Problem

Many parents think they have a screen-time problem. What they often have is an attention problem.

Short-form content rewards constant novelty. Every swipe delivers something new. A joke. A face. A sound. A surprise. A reward.

Over time, slower activities can begin feeling unusually difficult. Reading. Studying. Practising. Even sitting quietly.

Research cited by the American Psychological Association suggests that frequent attention switching can make sustained focus harder, particularly for younger users.

This is why many parents notice something beyond "too much screen time." They notice:

Try This At Home

Ask your child to intentionally engage with six or seven healthy topics for a few days.

For example:

  • science
  • football
  • art
  • wildlife
  • cooking
  • productivity
  • travel

Encourage them to:

  • search for those topics
  • watch related videos
  • interact with relevant content

Then ask: "What changed in your feed?"

That's the entire exercise. The goal is not restriction. It's visibility.

Once children realise that their behaviour trains the algorithm, they often become more intentional about what they engage with.

If children understand how algorithms react to their behaviour, they become much less passive online.

One Of The Smartest Media Literacy Lessons

Gurdit sometimes takes this even further. He asks children to create content themselves.

Two versions of the same reel. One genuinely useful. One built around a clickbait hook.

The outcome is usually predictable. The clickbait version performs better. The children already know it.

If a child can create clickbait, they become far less likely to fall for it.

That insight matters. Because children stop seeing feeds as truth. They start seeing them as systems competing for attention.

Small Ways Families Can Push Back

Digital wellbeing is not just about reducing screen time. It's about helping children engage with technology more consciously.

Some simple habits help:

  • explore different kinds of content
  • actively use "Not Interested" controls
  • create screen-free time before bed
  • take breaks during long scrolling sessions
  • occasionally watch content together and discuss it

Small actions. Repeated consistently.
